Research management of a major crop pest in Africa

Dr William Kirk, Senior Lecturer in the School of Life Sciences at Keele University, has been awarded a prestigious Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) Foundation Award. The £596,000 project, for Global Agriculture and Food Systems Research, funded through the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), will allow Dr Kirk and his team to carry out a two-year project titled ‘Improving food safety by reducing pesticide residues: developing a pheromone alternative to insecticides for control of thrips on legumes in Kenya.’

Delivery of a Diagnostic test pilot scheme for Brassicas and Onions

The overall objective of this project is to provide fully validated diagnostic tests for the brassica and onion industry within a commercial setting, and also to provide a vehicle to raise awareness with other growers of the benefits, value, sensitivity and decision support capability of the tests via an AHDB KE program.

Cucumber: Development and testing of a lateral flow device for both gummy stem blight and powdery mildew in bio-aerosols during cucurbit production

The aim of the project is to produce on-site tests which can be used singly or in a multiplex format to monitor glasshouse bio-aerosols for gummy stem blight and powdery mildew in glasshouse cucumbers. Intervention/control measures would be applied in response to disease risk from the on-site tests.

This Innovate funded project, led Mologic Ltd, will develop semiautomatic spore trapping devices for monitoring fungal pathogens responsible for fruit rotting and provide growers with aligned technologies to use these devices.
